When shopping online or making transactions, you will often need to check when a product will arrive.

In French, there are standard phrases for each step: giving your order number, asking about the shipping status, and confirming the expected delivery date.

In this lesson, I will introduce useful French phrases for checking delivery status and explain the grammar points behind them.

1. Expressions for Asking About Delivery

To inquire about the progress of an order, use the following phrase:

  • Je voudrais savoir où en est ma commande.
(Hello, I would like to know the status of my order.)

je voudrais …” = “I would like …,” a polite way to make a request (similar to English “I would like …”).

où en est …” = “where something is at (in its progress),” useful for asking about status updates.

2. Giving the Order Number

When checking delivery status, you will be asked for the order number (numéro de commande).

  • C’est le numéro 2587.
    (The number is 2587.)

c’est …” = “it is …,” a simple and common way to give information such as a number.

Numbers may be read digit by digit or in groups:

  • 2587 → deux-cinq-huit-sept (2-5-8-7)
  • 2587 → vingt-cinq / quatre-vingt-sept (25 / 87)

3. Phrases Describing Delivery Status

When you inquire, the staff may respond with phrases such as:

  • Votre colis est en cours de livraison.
(Your package is currently being delivered.)
  • Votre commande est en préparation.
    (Your order is being prepared.)
  • Votre colis a déjà été expédié.
(Your package has already been shipped.)

Grammar points:

  • en cours de …
    → “in the process of …” / “currently …”
  • expédier
    → “to ship”;
  • a déjà été expédié
→ “has already been shipped” (passive voice + passé composé).

4. Confirming the Expected Delivery Date

To ask when a package will arrive, use the future tense:

  • Savez-vous quand il sera livré ?
(Do you know when it will be delivered?)

il sera livré” = “it will be delivered” (simple future + passive voice), commonly used when asking about scheduled delivery.

Possible replies include:

  • Demain matin.
    (Tomorrow morning)
  • Dans deux jours.
     (In two days)
  • La semaine prochaine.
    (Next week)

If you can understand these expressions, you will immediately know the expected delivery date.

Summary

  • Je voudrais savoir où en est …
→ “I would like to know the status of …”
  • numéro de commande
→ order number, essential for delivery inquiries
  • en cours de livraison / expédié / en préparation
