Checking Out of a Hotel | French Travel Conversations

On the final day of your trip, you will need to check out of your hotel. Being able to handle the payment, return the key, and complete the checkout process in French will give you peace of mind.
In this lesson, I will introduce useful French phrases for checking out of a hotel and explain some important grammar points.
Dialogu

Bonjour, je voudrais régler ma note, s’il vous plaît.
(Hello, I would like to check out, please.)

Très bien, vous avez consommé quelque chose du minibar ?
(Certainly. Did you use anything from the minibar?)

Non, rien du tout.
(No, nothing at all.)

D’accord. Voici le montant total : 120 euros.
(All right. The total amount is 120 euros.)

Je peux payer par carte ?
(Can I pay by card?)

Oui, bien sûr. Merci pour votre séjour et bon voyage !
(Of course. Thank you for your stay, and have a good trip!)
Grammar and Expression Points
1. Asking to Check Out
The most common phrase at checkout is:
- Je voudrais régler ma note. (I would like to settle my bill.)
→ I’d like to check out.
“Je voudrais …” is a polite way of saying “I would like to …,” using the conditional tense of vouloir (to want). This softens the request and makes it polite, similar to English “I’d like to …”.
Here, “ma note” means “the bill.” In restaurants, the word l’addition is used for the check, but in hotels note is standard.
2. Confirming Extra Charges or Minibar Use
Hotel staff often ask whether you used any additional services.
- Vous avez consommé quelque chose du minibar ?
(Did you use anything from the minibar?)
The verb consommer means “to consume” or “to use.” It is often used when confirming the use of food, drinks, or services.
Other common questions:
- Avez-vous utilisé le service de chambre ?
(Did you use room service?)
3. Asking About Payment Methods
After being told the total amount, you can confirm how to pay.
- Je peux payer par carte ?
(Can I pay by card?) - Je peux payer en espèces ?
(Can I pay in cash?)
Although card payments are the norm in France, small hotels or those in rural areas may require cash.
You may also hear:
- Par carte ou en liquide ? (By card or in cash?)
4. Parting Phrases
Once payment is completed, hotel staff often thank you and wish you a safe journey.
- Merci pour votre séjour. (Thank you for your stay.)
- Bon voyage ! (Have a good trip!)
- À bientôt ! (See you again!)
Responding in French with a simple thank-you leaves a good impression:
- Merci beaucoup ! (Thank you very much!)
